Hero Folk Story

Zofia first appeared at the gates with soot in her hair, a crossbow over one shoulder, and enough clinking bottles to make the guards step cautiously aside. She offered no homeland, master, or family name—only an enthusiastic demonstration of a curative that closed a soldier’s wound while turning his beard blue. By sunset she had been welcomed into the city, banned from three apothecaries, and blamed for a flock of unusually large pigeons circling the western tower.

Calling Zofia an alchemist is accurate in the same way that calling fire warm is accurate. Her craft combines volatile tinctures, poisoned bolts, enchanted machinery, and several devices that reputable scholars insist cannot exist. Among them is a peculiar barrier capable of halting arrows in midair, preserving each projectile until the contraption releases them without so much as disturbing their flight. When asked who built it, Zofia invariably gives a different answer—and always seems delighted when no one believes her.

Where most healers remain behind the battle line, Zofia thrives in its most dangerous spaces. She bounds through smoke and steel, hurling restoratives toward wounded allies and untested compounds toward anyone reckless enough to stand nearby. Her mixtures can swell an ordinary warrior into a towering terror, strip curses from the afflicted, or drive an entire company into a frenzy of impossible speed. Whether each result was intended is often difficult to determine, even from Zofia’s reaction.

Behind the laughter and theatrical mishaps, however, lies a precision she rarely allows others to see. Her jokes end whenever someone examines her trinkets too closely, and beneath the labels pasted over certain bottles are markings belonging to no known alchemical tradition. Some believe Zofia escaped from a hidden workshop. Others suspect she stole her collection from something far older and far more dangerous. Zofia dismisses every theory with a grin, uncorks another brightly colored vial, and assures everyone nearby that this particular formula has “almost certainly” been tested.
